Skills & Proficiencies
WHAT I BRING TO THE TABLE

*Communication:
This fall, I had the opportunity to give a speech at my big sister's wedding in front of numerous family members, friends, and guests. This was both an honor and a challenge, as I have never spoke in public to an audience of this size before, nor have I spoken about an emotional, personal topic. My composure, perseverance, and public speaking allowed me to deliver a flawless, heartfelt, emotional, and passionate of a lifetime.

*Critical Problem Solving:
For my final project in my Journalism 200: Mass Media Information class this semester, I was tasked with writing a research paper about a current, controversial topic. A significant portion of the assignment was to interview three expert sources on my topic. As I did not know any perceived experts in this field, I relied on my skills in researching, persistent communication, written and verbally, and interviewing to successfully find the sources needed, one of whom is a government official. This posed a significant challenge that I had to overcome with critical problem solving techniques and fortitude.

*Collaboration:
In my current Sports Marketing 220, a group project was a major assignment. I collaborated with my fellow students in my designated group to help prepare the content and assign the necessary tasks and sections for all group members. My strengths in leadership, organization, writing, communication, and presentation layout allowed our team to deliver a successful project.

*Culture:
I met the most amazing young woman this semester who has become an important part of my life. We bonded quickly and shared common interests, values, goals, and hobbies. However, there was a major cultural hurdle that we needed to cross together to continue moving forward. We come from different religious backgrounds which posed a significant relationship issue, but I learned to open my mind and embrace a different cultural, religious experience this year. I took it upon myself to study her religious practices and to better understand her beliefs, which were important to who she is as a person. I learned that through compromise, understanding, proper research, and open mindedness that cultural barriers can be overcome.

*Competencies:
Before this semester, I have never conducted a series of random interviews with people who I did not know in order to meet the requirements of my Journalism 200 curriculum. This was not just a one time assignment, in entailed a series of interviews on a variety of topics over the course of the semester. I persevered and sharpened my communication skills to exceed expectations for this series of interviews. First, I had to prepare the questions on the topics in advance, but more importantly, I had to verbally articulate them in an unassuming or intimidating, yet explicit manner, to be able to solicit responses, which I did so successfully on multiple occasions. My enhanced verbal communication skills in how I approached people randomly allowed me to gain their attention, secure their trust, and encourage their participation guided me through these assignments.
